I was once in a workshop presented by Barbara Nechis, in which she suggested that if we were ever painting something that had been painted a million times before, we should ask ourselves if the 1,000,001st painting was really necessary. So, since then I've tried to put something unique into each of my paintings. This is fairly straightforward with abstracts, but requires some thought in realistic paintings. For example, Banff - one of the subjects in this portfolio - has probably been painted the requisite million times, but never, as far as I know, from this angle in the middle of the night… And the much-photographed and painted Portofino hasn't been done as a newspaper collage. Well not a million times anyway.
