Artist Statement

The paintings are done in an expressionistic style: spontaneously, in the moment. Each series speaks metaphorically. The mediums used are watercolors, gouache, pastels, oils or mixed media painted on 100% rag paper or cloth using conservation framing.

Series of 4:

(#4)Feelings of Ease

Scenes of relaxed living spaces. Scenes of the seaside life at English Bay.

(#3) The Dance of Life

The Dance was inspired by an article written about how women love to dance [and all children until they grow up].

Tango is about the inner spirit felt during the dance. In this painting, I’m giving myself permission to experience more sensuality.

Other works in this series are the Flamenco and Belly Dancing, all relating to celebration.

(#2)Birds and relationships

Birds, a word used to refer to couples, fits well with this series about couples and relationships. These birds talk in brightly colored images painted with acrylic or oils.

(#1)Flowers and Soul

I began painting flowers using Chinese brushes and following my instincts to paint without analyzing, putting down to the best of my ability what I saw. Flowers brought remembrance of flowers grown by my mother and grandmothers and the beauty of the colours and forms.

Through metaphors, colour, movement, form and line I try to express and learn from my experiences of life.
