Artist Statement

Since I was a child I have always been interested in art. When I first started to look into “Kwagiutl Art” I was fascinated by it. I started to paint in the traditional styles along traditional story lines. After a few years I found that other artists utilized the same stories and ideas. I was not content. I then started to experiment with different styles and mediums to break the mold and away from the traditional approach.

I try to incorporate a more modern feeling into “My Art”. Going into a new millennium I use a more graphic abstract approach, combining the strong traditional shapes and forms from the past and blending them with my own ideas and other influences. The traditional art is changing and becoming more contemporary. Just as in modern life tradition plays a major role within “Native Art”, but unless we can experiment with new styles and mediums and be able to adapt to the present the art cannot evolve. I wish that my art not be categorized or placed. It is “My Art”. I just want people to enjoy it. I look to the future as well as the past and create. I strive to find and explore new directions in “My Art”.
